According to Inside Higher Education, Crichton College in Tennessee is changing from nonprofit to for-profit and rebranding “to be probably a little more blatantly Christian.” The new status raises questions regarding the institution’s religious and educational character and how the for-profit status may affect, even trump its religious status.
The article also examines the difficult transition that Grand Canyon University experienced when it, too, was acquired in 2004 and turned into a for-profit institution with a continued residence program supplemented by a very large online student body.
It today’s climate of financial stringency, other schools may be facing similar transitions, and it will be important for faculty and other stakeholders to ponder the experience of Grand Canyon and Crichton.
